Hi! We’re Adam and David, a married couple from the UK, and we’re incredibly excited to be on our journey towards becoming dads.

Our story began in London in 2022, when the stars somehow aligned and brought us both to the Prince Albert pub on our first date. Neither of us could have known then quite how much that meeting would change our lives.

Over the next two years, we fell steadily and very happily in love. We travelled together, collecting memories in Zanzibar, Australia, South Africa, Italy, Ireland, Spain, France, Austria and the Carribean. From sunset dinners on far-flung beaches to horse riding over volcanic ridges and countless games of cards on European ski slopes we’re continuously grateful for all of the adventures that come with discovering the world together.

Somewhere along the way, we realised it wasn’t only the stars that had aligned when we met. Our values, hopes and dreams had too. We wanted the same things from life: a close family, a home filled with people, laughter, love, and, more than anything, the chance to have children of our own one day.

Two years after we met, David decided it was time to ask Adam a rather important question. He chose one of the wildest and most beautiful corners of Scotland: the Isle of Skye. After making their way into the Black Cuillin mountains, David found a secluded spot high above the water, looking down towards the place where the freshwater of Loch Coruisk meets the saltwater of Loch Scavaig and runs out towards the sea. Surrounded by dark mountains, open sky and water stretching below us, David asked Adam to marry him. Adam, thankfully, said a very hearty yes.

We celebrated there on the mountainside by drinking from a traditional Scottish silver quaich or “love cup” which David had secretly carried up the mountain. There was something wonderfully symbolic about beginning our engagement in a place where two bodies of water meet and become one.

The following morning, perhaps unwisely, we celebrated by running a half marathon through the hills of Skye. We wore “JUST ENGAGED” in diamontes across the shirts our backs, and as we ran through tiny villages and along winding island roads, complete strangers cheered and congratulated us. It remains one of those gloriously happy weekends that neither of us will ever forget.

In 2024, we were married in the Scottish Highlands at the beautiful Mar Lodge Estate, surrounded by the people we love most. Against a backdrop of mountains, forests and the River Dee, our families and friends came together to celebrate with us. To this day, it remains one of the happiest memories of our lives.

And even then, we knew that our wedding was still only the beginning of our story. It was the foundation block for the family we hoped to build together.

As a same-sex couple, we have always known that becoming parents would require the kindness and generosity of some incredibly special people. That knowledge is ultimately what has brought us here, to surrogacy. We’ve both built careers that we love. David is a medical doctor, supporting people in their own homes through difficulties with their mental health and addiction, whilst Adam works amongst the buzz of the city in insurance and finance. Our jobs are very different, and in many ways so are we, but we think that is part of what makes us such a good team.

David is naturally caring, playful and calm, while Adam is thoughtful, organised and usually the person making sure there is a plan, whether that’s the next family gathering, holiday or adventure. Between us, we hope we have a pretty good combination of spontaneity and sensible planning, although having helped look after our 8 nieces and nephews, we’re acutely aware that it won’t always be easy.

What matters much more than any of though, is that we will always be a team which prioritises the needs of our child with a sense of share responsibility, gratitude and joy. Family is at the centre of both our lives. We believe deeply in kindness, humour, loyalty and showing up for the people you love. More than anything, we want our child to grow up with the absolute certainty that they are loved, supported and free to become entirely themselves.

We feel enormously fortunate and proud of the extended family our child will be born into. We are both extremely close to our parents, our siblings and their families. There are grandparents already dreaming about cuddles, aunts and uncles eager to spoil them, and cousins waiting to have another little person join the chaos. We also have a wonderful group of friends who, over the years, have become family in every meaningful sense of the word.

Our home is happiest when it is full. We love cooking, long lunches around the table, having friends and family stay, travelling and getting outdoors.…And then there is Gladys, our Welsh Terrier, who has an enormous personality packed into a fairly small dog and keeps us constantly entertained.

We dream of creating a family home that feels warm, safe and joyful. Somewhere with muddy shoes by the door, people gathered around the kitchen table, children’s drawings on the fridge and Gladys, inevitably somewhere she isn’t supposed to be!

We both get a little teary-eyed when we allow ourselves to imagine what it might actually feel like to raise a child together. And strangely, it isn’t only the enormous milestones we find ourselves dreaming about.

It’s the ordinary moments like helping little hands bake cookies on Christmas Eve, or requests for favourite bedtime stories to read for the hundredth time. We long for Sunday lunches with our families whilst cousins chatter excitedly around the table about their latest adventures. We imagine family holidays on the Scottish coast taking windswept walks along the beach, with little hands holding ours, and squeals of delight when they are lifted onto our shoulders.

We will be the kind of parents, who never forget how lucky we are, to be enchanted and trusted with all of the stories from school that day. Even when we are exhausted, it will always be a privilege to answer the endless questions about how the world works and why the sky is blue.

We dream of supporting our child to thrive in the world around them, whilst helping those around them with a sense of generosity and kindness.

We imagine watching our child discover who they are and having the extraordinary privilege of being there beside them while they do.

We have already taken some big steps towards making that dream real. We travelled to Toronto together for the first stages of our fertility journey and have now matched with an egg donor in the United States. Each milestone has felt slightly surreal. Something we had talked about for years has gradually begun to move from imagination into reality.

And that has made us even more excited to meet the person who might help us take the most important next step.

When we think about our surrogate, we don’t have a particular person in mind. What matters to us is something much more human: that we connect.

We hope to meet someone with whom we can build a relationship based on trust, honesty, warmth and mutual respect. If that special person was comfortable, we would love to share the important moments of the pregnancy; the scans, the updates, the excitement and all the little milestones along the way. At the same time, we understand that this journey belongs to all of us. We would always want to respect our surrogate’s wishes, her family, her boundaries and the enormous role she is playing in our lives.

It is almost impossible to imagine exactly what it will feel like to hold our baby for the first time. We suspect there will be tears of joy and gratitude (probably quite a lot of them!)

After all the years of imagining that moment, and after all the people whose generosity, science, care and kindness will have helped us reach it, we think the overwhelming feeling will be gratitude: gratitude for our child, gratitude for each other and an enormous, lifelong gratitude towards the person who helped us become a family.

We know that choosing to help someone become a parent through surrogacy is an extraordinary decision. We would never take that generosity for granted. If you choose to get to know us, we hope you’ll quickly see how much becoming dads means to us and also how much love is already waiting for the child we hope to bring into the world.

They don’t exist yet, and somehow they are already talked about, imagined and loved by an entire family.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story and to learn a little about us. We would absolutely love the opportunity to learn yours.

Letter to Future Surrogate:

Dearest Surrogate,

It’s difficult to know how to begin a letter to someone we haven’t met yet, but who could become one of the most important people in our lives.

We have both wanted to become parents for a long time. As two men, we have always known that we wouldn’t be able to create our family without the help and generosity of other people. Knowing that is one thing; actually beginning this journey and thinking about the person who might one day carry our child makes us realise just how extraordinary that help really is.

We have both been incredibly lucky in our own lives. We were each given wonderful childhoods by parents who made us feel loved, safe and supported, and we are so grateful to them for that. When we talk about becoming dads, we often come back to the same thing: we want to give our child what our parents gave us.

We want them to grow up in a home where they always know they are loved. We want to encourage them to be kind, confident and curious, to make mistakes and learn from them, and above all to know that they can always come home to us. And, of course, we want it to be fun.

We already laugh about the dads we think we’ll become. David will be the one doing silly dances around the house – including his infamous “toot toot dance” – and Adam can’t wait to have a little helper baking with him in the kitchen. We imagine bedtime stories, family holidays, Christmas mornings, Sunday lunches, walks with our Welsh Terrier Gladys, and a house full of family, friends and probably quite a lot of noise.

These might sound like very ordinary things, but to us they are incredibly special because we know that having them isn’t something we can take for granted. We sometimes try to imagine what it will feel like to hold our child for the first time. After dreaming about becoming dads and going through this journey together, we think it will probably be completely overwhelming. There will almost certainly be tears. We imagine looking at this tiny person and suddenly realising that we are somebody’s dads and that our family has changed forever. And we know that, in that moment, we will also be thinking about you.

It is difficult to find words big enough to describe what it would mean for someone to choose to carry our child. “Thank you” somehow doesn’t seem adequate for something that could change the rest of our lives.

If you choose to go on this journey with us, we hope that you will never feel like you are simply carrying a baby for us. We would like this to be a relationship built on trust, honesty, warmth and respect. We want to get to know you as a person, to hear about your life and your family, to laugh together and hopefully share some wonderful memories along the way.

We would love to be involved in the pregnancy and share the exciting milestones with you, while always respecting that it is your body and understanding that you have your own life and family around you. We want you to feel able to tell us what you need from us, what you’re comfortable with and, just as importantly, when you need some space. Most of all, we want you to know how much we would value you.

One day, we hope to tell our child the story of how they came into the world. We want them to understand from an early age that they were incredibly wanted and loved long before they were born, and that a very special woman made an extraordinary decision that allowed their dads to become a family.

We hope very much that we get the opportunity to meet you and hear your story too.

Thank you for considering giving us something we could never give ourselves.

With love,

Adam & David
