I’m a primary school teacher, working with children between the ages of 5 and 12, and John works as a Supply Planner for a medical device company. Children and family have always been such a natural part of the life we imagined building together.

John and I met completely by chance on a night out in 2009. We started talking, exchanged numbers, and what began as a random meeting became something neither of us could have predicted. Six years later, just after Christmas in December 2015, we were married.

Like so many couples, we assumed that when the time came, we would simply have children and begin the next chapter of our lives. Learning that we wouldn’t be able to have children naturally was heartbreaking. It took us time to grieve the future we had pictured and to begin thinking about what becoming parents might look like for us in a different way.

Our first thought was adoption. Then a family friend mentioned surrogacy.

At first, surrogacy felt like such a huge step. We had so many questions and some uncertainty about whether it was the right path for us. But the more we learned, the more our perspective changed. We began hearing the stories of women who choose to become surrogates and understanding the incredible heart behind a decision to help another family in this way.

Slowly, surrogacy stopped feeling like an alternative and started feeling like a beautiful possibility.

There is something incredibly powerful about a woman choosing to help another family experience something they cannot achieve on their own. We have so much respect for the women who make that choice, and we understand that becoming a surrogate is an enormous commitment of time, energy, trust and heart.

If we are lucky enough to find the woman who chooses to take this journey with us, we want her to know that this will be her journey too. We don’t want to simply wait on the sidelines for our baby to arrive. We want to share in the experience with her—the exciting moments, the appointments and milestones, the nervous moments, the laughter and everything in between.

We hope to build a relationship where she feels genuinely loved, supported, appreciated and cared for throughout the entire journey. We want to know her as a person, to know the people who are important to her, and to make sure she always knows how important she is to us—not only because she is carrying our baby, but because of the extraordinary person she is and the place she will forever hold in our family’s story.

And we hope that relationship doesn’t simply end when the baby arrives. Our dream is that when we look back on this experience years from now, we won’t only remember the woman who helped us become parents. We will remember someone we shared one of the most meaningful chapters of our lives with.

For us, surrogacy is about so much more than having a baby. It is about trust, connection, friendship and two families coming together to create something incredibly special.

We know there is a woman at the heart of this journey, and if she chooses us, we intend to honour that choice with all the love, gratitude and care we can give.
