I have wanted to be a mom for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a very close, loving family and that’s why I think it’s so important to me. Because my family is so important to me, I would like to make sure that it continues into the future. I’ve always wanted to be a solo parent in part because I have such a good family around me as well as very good support network of friends. I started trying to become a mom in my late 30s. I would have tried to do it earlier, but I wasn’t in a financial position to do so. By the time I had established myself with a decent income and home, it meant that my fertility was already dropping. I started fertility treatments and I went on to have four very early miscarriages. The first was using my own eggs and the next three were using donor eggs. This has been a very hard journey and a very long one. I am a high school teacher and I actually really love my job (many people find that hard to believe but it’s true.) I enjoy being around kids and watching them learn and grow but I have always wanted to have a child that I could raise and be part of their development right from the very beginning. I wish I could’ve had the experience of carrying and delivering a baby myself. It’s been very hard accepting that my body would not do this. I know that motherhood comes in many different ways. There are adopted children on both sides of my family who have been wonderful additions to our family. I don’t really care about having a genetic relationship with my child because I know that family is much more than that, but I also know that having a child in your family from birth is a truly special thing and I really wish I could have this experience. I believe that I have a lot to offer a child. I live in a comfortable and safe home and neighbourhood with parks and schools and I am in a good position materially and can support them in having a good future. But more that, I have a great family and group of friends that they could grow up surrounded by. I really believe that the ‘village raises the child’ and I have a great village to bring them into. The idea of altruistic surrogacy is something I really respect and value, I can’t think of a greater gift than giving someone else the future of their family.
