Meet Giulian & Amila

We are Amila & Giulian, a 34-year old couple based in Toronto. Here’s our story:

We became friends in high school, and legend has it that Amila initially had a crush on Giulian but he wasn’t interested at the time. We maintained a friendship throughout high school and coincidentally both ended up at the University of Guelph. We started dating during undergrad and have now been together for 13 years. We were expecting to get married in 2020 but the COVID pandemic had other plans, which caused us to reschedule our wedding twice. We finally had our special day in August of 2022 at Evergreen Brick Works and it was both the best day of our lives and the hottest day of the year.

Amila was born in Bosnia and immigrated to Canada at age 3. She holds a PhD from U of T and works as a medical advisor for a pharmaceutical company, supporting patients with heart disease. Giulian helps run his family’s auto body business, founded 50 years ago by his grandfather who immigrated from Italy, which now includes three locations across the GTA. He takes pride in carrying on the family tradition of quality service and community care.

Outside of work we’re an active, adventurous pair who love golf, tennis, boxing, cooking and traveling. We are both fairly competitive and have similar interests, which definitely keeps our relationship interesting and exciting. Amila has a newfound obsession with gardening around our home and she’s done a great job in a short period of time. In Giulian’s eyes, her daily dedication to growing our garden is symbolic of her readiness to care for our future child. We share our home in Etobicoke with our long-haired Dachshund Lola who is the boss of the household. It doesn’t matter how early it is in the morning, if Lola is hungry she will make sure Giulian wakes up to feed her. We are financially stable, surrounded by supportive family & friends, have a home filled with love and laughter (and Dachshund stubbornness). We’ve long dreamed of becoming parents, and we are fully prepared to give our future child a life full of joy, security, and opportunity.

After three years of infertility, we made the decision to pursue surrogacy. Like many others, our journey has come with highs, lows, and heartbreak: three IVF cycles, four failed embryo transfers, multiple failed IUIs, and two miscarriages (with some recovery complications), and so on. We have been consulted by four fertility specialists, with the most recent diagnosing Amila with endometriosis and a blood clotting condition, factors contributing to recurrent implantation failure and miscarriage. The journey has been incredibly challenging, especially for Amila, who has endured so much physically and emotionally, and has spent countless hours attempting to achieve a successful pregnancy. Despite all the above, our hope remains strong as we can create lots of healthy normal embryos. We have FIVE genetically-tested frozen embryos at Create Downtown, and we remain committed to growing our family through surrogacy.
