We are Jennick and Bjorn Schuermans, a married gay couple of 31 and 35 years old. We are living in the Netherlands, we moved from our appartment in the city center to a bigger house with a garden in the suburbs about three years ago. We like to travel (so far we have, amongst other countries, been to South Africa, California and Italy), we try to live as healthy as possible by going to the gym regularly and cook healthy meals. We like to go out with family and friends and often plan a day to the zoo with our nephew. Also, we both have good jobs and are both educated. We would love for our surrogate to become our friend during our journey; after all we’re all in it together!

Dear future baby, As we write this letter, our children are not yet born. And yet, in our hearts, they are already here. We see them in our dreams, we talk about them every single day, and we imagine the world we will create with them and for them.

We don’t just dream of becoming parents—we dream of being their parents. The kind who build forts in the living room and let the cushions become castles. The kind who read bedtime stories in funny voices that make them giggle until they fall asleep smiling. The kind who celebrate every scraped knee, every math problem solved, every birthday wish whispered into candlelight.

We imagine rollercoasters at amusement parks, where Papa Jennick sits up front with hands in the air, screaming with laughter, and Papa Björn stays behind with snacks, jokes, and a camera ready to capture every wide-eyed moment. We picture days in children’s museums—where little hands touch, try, and learn—and where we’re right beside them, answering questions, guiding curiosity, and encouraging wonder.

We see ourselves swimming together—Jennick, once a competitive swimmer, lovingly teaching our children how to float, breathe, and glide with confidence. And Björn, always the one to splash, to laugh, to turn a simple swim into the best water game ever played.

We picture warm holidays in sunny countries. Because, well—Dutch weather! We crave golden beaches, waterslides, sandcastles, and all-you-can-eat buffets with sticky little fingers and chocolate-covered cheeks. We’ll slather on SPF 50, pass out ice creams, and take turns holding tiny hands as we race into the waves.

There will be rainy autumn days too—perfect for forest walks, collecting leaves, spotting mushrooms, and jumping in puddles until we’re soaked and laughing. On cozy evenings, we’ll bake pancakes (Björn makes the fluffiest ones), build forts, and gather family and friends around for birthdays with homemade cakes, candles that just won’t blow out, and lots of love.

At Easter, we’ll hide little eggs in the garden—only for the grandparents to “accidentally” give away the best hiding spots. On New Year’s Eve, we’ll stay close as a family, warm and together, maybe under one big blanket with popcorn and a family film. Speaking of movies—yes, we’ll go to the cinema “for the kids,” but honestly… we’ll enjoy it just as much.

There will be afternoons spent doing arts and crafts, gluing googly eyes to everything. Mornings doing math exercises at the kitchen table. Evenings filled with stories, cuddles, and a sense of safety that says, “You are home, you are loved, and you are enough.”

And beyond all the plans and the play and the pancakes, what we hope most is this: that our children grow up feeling deeply, unshakably loved. That they know they belong. That they see their two dads as a team, full of warmth, care, strength, and joy.

We are ready. Ready to give our children not just everything they need, but everything we can dream of giving them. A life full of connection, laughter, adventure, and love.
