Meet Jennifer & John

Hi! Jenn and I have been fortunate enough to have lived in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains in Canmore, Alberta since we met almost sixteen years ago.
Jennifer is a Project Manager for a telephone company. She is passionate about our little monster, Porter, as well as cooking, baking (she’s known locally for her amazing cupcakes), animals, camping, traveling, mountain biking and spending time with friends and family. Jenn was born and raised in Alberta, living in some real hot spots (haha) like Brooks, Peace River, Grande Prairie and Calgary.
I’m a professional wildlife photographer and am an avid mountain biker, hiker, and fisherman. I grew up playing all sorts of sports and am still addicted to the NHL, the NBA and the PGA, and am a life-long, die-hard Vancouver Canucks fan. I’m originally from BC and have lived in Salmon Arm, Vancouver, Quebec City, San Francisco, Banff and Canmore.
Jenn and I met online and within weeks we both knew we wanted to be together and to be parents. We got pregnant as soon as we tried and Jenn announced it to me by wearing a t-shirt that said, “Future Canucks Fan” with tiny footprints on her belly! Unfortunately, nine weeks later, our first pregnancy ended in heartbreak and the devastating loss of our little baby.
For almost eight years, we struggled through fertility issues and suffered four more crushing miscarriages. But we refused to give up hope and when our second fertility clinic in Portland, Oregon suggested that we consider a gestational carrier/surrogate for our embryos, we embarked on a surrogacy journey with Canadian Fertility Consulting. We were soon matched up with a wonderful surrogate in Ontario and within a year were there in Hamilton to watch the amazing birth of our son, Porter. We announced the exciting news of our surrogate pregnancy in a unique way that had Jenn’s Mom in tears for weeks!
It is hard to put into words just what Porter means to both of us. He is our little miracle baby and has grown into an adorable 4.5 year-old boy. He loves Spiderman, trains, diggers, fishing and camping, and honestly, he’s the best thing that has ever happened to either of us. Porter is also the first and only grandchild for Jenn’s parents and as the youngest kid in my extended family, he’s a mini rock star with all of his grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Because we met fairly late in life and struggled with fertility issues for almost a decade, we’re both older parents at this point and Porter is more than ten years younger than his closest cousin. We don’t want Porter to be alone later in life and think that he would make the most amazing big brother, so we would love him to have a younger sibling. Plus, if we’re being honest again, we both would absolutely love to have another baby and go through all of these same joys one more time.
Covid derailed our opportunity to have another baby with our first surrogate, but we are incredibly grateful that we still have a close relationship with her and her family. We are also grateful that we may potentially have the opportunity to have a second surrogate and add to our “family.” We cannot wait to meet the incredible woman, and her family, who will help us complete our family. We are so excited to meet you!
