“Strawberry frozen yogurt.” It was the end of 2010, and if Jordan knew this phrase in Brazilian Portuguese, our story may never have been written. Aloan is a native of Rio de Janeiro, and Jordan was travelling through Brazil to Paraguay for a friend’s wedding. Aloan overheard Jordan’s unmistakable Canadian accent in a food court ordering a tasty treat (Aloan had studied in Vancouver and recognized it instantly). Aloan, intrigued, couldn’t help but investigate …

Dating in the time of MSN Messenger and across continents was difficult, requiring long-haul trips every several months, some for less than a week. Al decided to move-in with Jordan in 2013, and by 2014 was applying for permanent residence from within Canada as an inland applicant, which meant he couldn’t leave the country for what became years. Losing his grandmother in this time was very difficult as Al couldn’t return to Rio for her funeral or he risked giving up his PR process.

Aloan is a free-spirit: he is loving, intuitive, expressive, playful, kind and generous. He’s also multi-lingual, fair, quirky, impatient, loyal to a fault, and determined to be a ‘pai’ (dad).
Jordan is the analytical, hard-working, patient and reliable counterfoil with the dark features and down-to-earth approach, which can lead to some interesting disagreements (Brazilians as a people are known to be energetic in their zest for life and often exhibit great enthusiasm and zeal, whereas we Canadians tend to be a bit less excitable and perhaps more measured in our approaches to many things…). Jordan is self-employed and opened his own law firm in 2007, while Aloan has gravitated from working at Via Rail to having studied Immigration Consulting which he can do from home as well as at the office.. We make it work 😉

We got engaged in 2016 and married that summer surrounded by our parents, Jordan’s large family and some of our Brazilian and European friends, but agreed to have a 2nd wedding on the beach in Rio so Aloan’s large extended family could celebrate with us too! Our Brazilian wedding included Jordan’s Canadian parents and uncles, but was primarily our Brazilian family including a trip down the aisle with our infant nephew.

In 2019 we were on an almost-annual trip to Rio and our sister-in-law had agreed to be our surrogate (though she would be taking tome away from finishing law school to do it). We were so excited! We took a battery of tests, met with clinic professionals, and were cleared to go except for a Brazilian arm of government, CFM, that must approve surrogacy in this heavily religiously-Catholic country. We were rejected, as our sister-in-law was not a blood relation (notwithstanding being mother of our nephew and married to Aloan’s brother), and perhaps they did not want to fund a pregnancy that would not result in a Brazilian taxpayer (though other less dignified reasons spring to mind). So now we were gutted, had paid for a whack of testing with the door slammed shut in our faces… our sister-in-law could not move to Canada to assist us here, so that avenue ended in extreme disappointment to all.

We purchased our first home in 2019. It was exciting, sure, but the upstairs had an ‘emptiness’. It needed a nursery, but started as an office. We filled the home with love and hope, and yet, something was missing…

Enter our puppy, Oreo, a gorgeous Border Collie born in July 2020. He arrived to us in September and filled our hearts with joy and our home with the sounds of love, but only so much… the ‘office’ still had a void, and daydreaming had the printer pedestal magically transform to a change-table, the desk to a crib, and the lampshade to a mobile…

Ready…Set…

Our magical egg donor landed this year, and we are all basically cleared for take-off, but we are one key ingredient away: the incredible SURROGATE who can complete the trifecta and have our journey take-off! Is it you!?
