The Decision is Made
So, you’ve been thinking about it for a while now and you’ve finally decided to start surrogacy abroad. Congratulations! However, before contacting the first people who will help you fulfill your dream of becoming parents, it’s important to:
- Choose the country in which you will carry out the procedure, and make sure to choose a country where the procedure is well framed so as not to have surprises afterwards. We were deciding between Canada and the United States, and ultimately we chose Canada to limit the language barrier, for its more altruistic laws on surrogacy and for personal financial reasons.
- Check the budget required for the whole procedure. It takes about 80, 000 Euros in Canada and 100 ,000 Euros in the USA if everything goes well during the procedure.
- Think about the various levels of commitment this will require, as this is a life project to be completed over the course of several years. On average, it takes between a year and a half to three years to complete the surrogacy process, from the first point of contact with an agency to the eventual birth of the baby.
Once the above points have been carefully considered, you can start contacting the proper organizations that will help you along the way to transforming your dream into reality:
- Firstly, an egg donor agency such as Egg Helpers will put you in touch with a donor database and manage your donor’s expenses through a reimbursement account account.
- Next, a surrogacy agency such as Canadian Fertility Consulting will connect you with surrogates and manage their expenses through a reimbursement account. They will also be the psychological and administrative support for both the surrogate mother and the intended parents.
- A fertility clinic is necessary for all the medical procedures of the journey, ranging from psychological and medical examination to stimulation procedures, removal of eggs, fertilization, and embryo transfer.
- A lawyer in the chosen country is needed for legal advice, and the drafting and negotiation of contracts with the egg donor and the surrogate mother. Ideally, this lawyer is located in the province or state that the future baby will be born in so they can take care of certain documents like the birth certificate and passport. This lawyer will also recommend independent lawyers for both the egg donor and surrogate mother. An additional lawyer will also be required in your home country for return procedures.
- An insurance company is required to protect the future baby in case of any unexpected medical situations that occur during birth.
- Finally, a translator may be a consideration if you need support in the language of the country. Some agencies may have staff on hand that speak your language or provide a translator for specific meetings.
We decided to use both Egg Helpers and Canadian Fertility Consulting because they’re the largest egg donor and surrogacy agencies in Canada, and we have heard many wonderful recommendations from parent’s who have used their services.
For the clinic, we chose CReATe in Toronto not only because we wanted to carry out the entire procedure in Canada, but also based on the fertility clinic’s excellent reputation. You can choose any clinic in the Us and Canada, but you should be aware of any travelling expenses that may be incurred.
Moreover, we strongly advise you to reach out to all of the different parties at the same time to minimize the duration of the procedure. Additionally, some surrogates will be better able to match with you if you already have your embryos ready for implantation.
If you would like extra guidance, we advise you reach out to other parents who are in the process of surrogacy or who are already parents through this procedure. Local surrogate support groups can provide you with additional information and contacts who can share their experiences with you. They will also be able to provide support and advice before, during, and after your own surrogacy journey.
